The Alexandria region is uniquely positioned in the picturesque Southern Fleurieu Peninsula at the final of the River Murray and as a gateway to the iconic Coorong. The Alexandria vision is about connecting communities’ through regional innovation, a thriving environment, quality of life and well being for all, increasing cultural vitality and activating vibrant spaces. The Alexandria community encompasses many townships, villages and rural areas, with two major hubs of Strathalbyn to the northeast (edge of the Adelaide Hills) and Goolwa (to the south at the end of the River Murray). The Alexandria area is one of the fastest growing regional areas in South Australia experiencing periurban trends while also noted for its high quality agricultural production (the second largest industry in the region). The area is renowned for its environment, heritage and lifestyle. Our population also extends to the south alongside ravishing coastline, acting as an annual nursery for SouthernRight Whales and a popular holiday and visitor destination. To the north, the population disperses throughout rolling hills and pastures, as a blend of rural living and important broad acre farming and vineyards.

The role of the SPDPC is to thrive strategic planning and development policy, strategic plans, council policies, and beginning projects for the clean and sustainable development for all areas of Council and receive due regard of regional differences and community expectations and consider matters referred to it by Council’s Development Assessment Panel, Council, the Chief Executive and Council staff and perform the functions delegated to it by Council. Alexandria Council is committed to engaging as widely and actively as feasible with its diverse communities, through a range of community consultations. Members of the public are encouraged to attend Council meetings. Pursuant to Section 122 of the Local Government Act 199, the Council must prosper and adopt plans to effectively manage its area, to be collectively known as the Strategic Management Plans. The Alexandria Council area is a rural and rural residential area, with growing township and holiday areas. The aim of the program is to work with communities to bear more opportunities for more people to become involved in club sport and active recreation. The region boasts rural, river and coastal vistas which are reflected in its communities and townships from Strathalbyn and Mount Compass to Milan and Goolwa at the mouth of the River Murray and Port Elliot and Middleton. We embrace the needs of the community by protecting and enhancing the automatic environment, lifestyles and the culture and heritage of its members through definite economic, social, cultural and environmental initiatives. The Alexandria Council has a range of buildings, meeting rooms, facilities and venues throughout the Council area. Some of these are available for hire to Community Groups, local businesses and individuals for activities. Alexandria Council values and recognizes the role of community groups and organizations within the Council area, and endeavors to financially urge a range of projects and activities that are seen to enhance quality of life, and deliver services to the community. Each year Alexandria Council makes funding available to our community under the Community Grants Program for (but not limited to) notforprofit sporting, recreational, social, arts and other community groups and, in some instances, local individuals in the promote of one off activities, projects, festivals and events. The Community Environment Grant aims to promote our community in achieving local environmental outcomes. Popular locations and facilities include: Councils are responsible for managing their local area, planning for the tomorrow and creating a sound and healthy environment. Alexandria Council proudly offers a diverse range of services including tourism facilities, parks and gardens, ovals, arts and culture programs, roads and bridges, festivals and events, town planning, animal management, waste management, library and information services and much more. Council's bylaw limits the number of dogs on one property at two (working dogs exempt). There is a important car park on site and two areas within the dog park for your dogs to appreciate so please do! Dog Wandering at Large A dog is considered to be Wandering at Large if the dog is in either a public or private store without the consent of the occupier and is not on a leash or if the dog is in a park without either being on a leash or without being lower effective control by command. For the dog to be considered lower effective control, the dog must be in proximity and able to be seen by the person to whom the dog is lower control.
